My Day in Asheville, North Carolina

Fun Things To Do At the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC

When most people think of the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, the first thing they think of is taking a tour of this magnificent chateau. And, in fact, the “House & Gardens Tour” is the most popular part of any visit to the Biltmore Estate. But there’s a lot more to do there than you might imagine. If you are looking for a full-day adventure at the Biltmore Estate, here are some of the fun things that you can do…

Sample wines at the Biltmore Winery

Just as many of the fabulous chateaux of France’s Loire Valley have their own winery, so too does the Biltmore Estate. The idea for a winery at the Biltmore Estate gained momentum during the 1970’s, and by 1984, the Biltmore Winery was able to produce its first bottling of North Carolina Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today, the winery produces a variety of red, white, rosé and sparkling wines, all of them sourced from vineyards on the sprawling 8,000-acre estate. So stop by for a wine tasting or a specialty wine experience. There’s also an indoor/outdoor wine bar, so you can enjoy a glass of wine (or two), all with amazing views of the local Blue Ridge Mountains.

Spend a half-day at Antler Hill Village

Yes, there’s a small village attached to the Biltmore Estate! It’s a mix of small retail shops, local food merchants (including a creamery) and even a Farmyard where small children can pet some cute farm animals. Oh, and there are also some places where you can grab a quick bite, like The Smokehouse (North Carolina pit BBQ) and Cedric’s Tavern.

One theme of the Antler Hill Village is “farm-to-table dining,” and all of the dining options are based on locally sourced, seasonal foods. Moreover, there are plenty of opportunities to check out the artwork of local artisans and to see how the village might have looked back in the 1890’s, when the Vanderbilt family was first building and designing the whole Biltmore Estate.

Explore the outdoors at the Outdoor Adventure Center

By now, you’re probably starting to get a good idea of the scale and size of the Biltmore Estate. And you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find out that there is an Outdoor Adventure Center right there on the estate. There are countless activities to partake in, including biking, horseback riding, and kayaking. One newly featured activity is called “Land Rover Expeditions,” where you can zip around the Biltmore Estate and surrounding environs in a Land Rover.

It’s also worth keeping an eye for exhibitions taking place at the Biltmore Estate. For example, starting in February 2018, the Biltmore Estate will open up a new fashion exhibit based on the glamorous costumes that appeared in the movie “Titanic.” The exhibit (“Glamour on Board: Fashion From Titanic the Movie”) is meant to evoke some of the glam and glitz of the era when the Biltmore Estate was achieving worldwide fame as a palatial American chateau.

So, as you can see, there’s plenty to do at the Biltmore Estate beyond just taking tours of the house and garden. You can literally spend a full day at the Biltmore Estate. And, if outdoor adventure is really your thing, it’s easy to see how you might even want to come back for a second day of fun at the Biltmore Estate!
