The Worst Intersections in Asheville NC
Did you know that according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Asheville is home to five of the top 100 most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in the State?
The five intersections below caused 32 injuries to pedestrians in just the last ten years. While last year’s number of pedestrian fatalities is down from the average of 11, there were still six fatalities in the Asheville, NC area.
5. Broadway Street and Hiawassee Street
This downtown intersection near the Masonic Temple has been the cause of five recent pedestrian traffic accidents due in part to its steep streets and low visibility.
4. Patton Avenue and Louisiana Avenue
There were 6 crashes at this intersection due to its high volume of traffic as well as many pedestrians waiting by the bus stop.
3. Patton Avenue and Asheland Avenue
This stretch of Patton Avenue is dangerous due to the small amount of space for pedestrians to walk on the sidewalk.
2. Patton Avenue at its junction with I-240
This section of Patton Avenue near Jeff Bowen Bridge has nearly 110,000 cars passing through it daily making it one of the busiest intersections on this list.
1. I-240 at I-26 junction
This intersection had nine pedestrian traffic incidents in recent years, which is why it tops our list.
What Should You do if You are Injured as a Pedestrian?
No matter how many precautions you take as a pedestrian, you may still be involved in a collision and sustain a serious injury.
Whether your accident occurred in one of Asheville’s dangerous intersections or right in front of your own home, the first step you take should be to get appropriate medical attention if able.
Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Even if you think that you don’t need to go to the hospital you should. After an accident your adrenaline may be pumping, and this could cause you to not realize you have injuries or how severe they may be.
After you receive any necessary medical care and are able, you should meet with an attorney and determine whether you are eligible to seek compensation for your injuries and damages. A lawyer can help you navigate through the insurance claim process and work with you to help get you back on your feet.
Medical bills may be accruing and you may be unable to work or care for your family. A personal injury attorney can help take some of the burden off of you and assist in getting you on the road to recovery.
Insurance companies will often try to blame you, the pedestrian for being hit…
The insurance company’s goal is simple… to pay you as little as possible.
Don’t get taken advantage of by the insurance company. Experienced legal counsel is important if you’ve been injured by a driver at an intersection or crosswalk.

Tips to Remember when Driving Through Asheville’s Most Dangerous Intersections
Pedestrians always have the right of way.
All drivers must take steps to minimize the risk of hitting a pedestrian. Always have a plan for how to avoid a pedestrian.
Always remain alert for pedestrians when you are traveling through the above listed intersections or any other areas where pedestrians may be present.
Pay close attention to and obey all traffic signs and signals, while staying aware of the speed of traffic and merging vehicles.
Keep alert and check twice for pedestrians and smaller vehicles approaching an intersection, such as motorcycles or bicycles.
Protect pedestrians by being courteous and allowing them to cross the intersection safely. Be especially cautious in low visibility situations.
When turning, pull forward slowly until you can see past anything that may be blocking your view. Once you are sure the intersection is clear, continue driving with care.
One of the most important precautions you can take to avoid hitting a pedestrian is to put away your cell phone, or any other device that would cause a distraction, until you have arrived at your destination.
