What is Post-Concussion Syndrome?

Post-Concussion Syndrome – What You Need to Know

Post-Concussion Syndrome occurs when the symptoms from a concussion persist beyond the time a health care professional would consider normal for the particular patient.  Concussions are, by definition, a type of brain damage. These traumatic brain injuries are commonly seen in car crash victims.

Concussions are caused by the brain moving forcefully against the inner walls of the skull. The effects of a concussion are sometimes temporary but can also have lasting complications.

Included with these complications is the fact you may be more susceptible to future concussions and the harm to you may be cumulative.

Suffering a traumatic brain injury is life altering. If you or a loved one suffered a brain injury due to the fault of someone else, you may want to speak to a personal injury lawyer.

Post-concussion victims need experienced legal representation. You do not have to handle your injuries while also trying to fight with an insurance company that is out to save a buck.

The law in North Carolina requires fair compensation for many types of damages, including but not limited to economic losses such as past and future medical bills as well as lost wages. NC law also requires fair compensation for non-economic damages such as permanent injury, scars, disfigurement and pain and suffering.

Here at Fisher Stark, P.A., we have experience representing people with traumatic brain injuries. Also, an experienced law firm such as Fisher Stark has the proper resources to conduct an effective investigation and take the case to trial.

If you or someone you know has suffered a traumatic brain injury, we invite you to call us today at 828-505-4300 to schedule a free consultation.

Concussions can cause sensory and cognitive confusion

What are the Symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome?

According to Dr. Robert Cantu the co-founder of Boston University’s CTE Center: Symptoms of concussions can be divided into four different categories.

Cognitive symptoms – such as problems with your memory, difficulty with concentration, issues multitasking and an inability to focus.

Physical or semantic symptoms – head problems like headaches, lightheadedness, dizziness, and sensitivity to light or noise.

Vestibular ocular symptoms – eye problems consisting of blurred vision, double vision, difficulty tracking objects with your eyes or difficulty with balance.

Emotional symptoms – these usually consist of anxiety, depression, or panic attacks.

With most concussions people will return to normal, however with long term post-concussion syndrome these symptoms can go on for months or even years. If you are experiencing these symptoms it is important to seek medical attention. It is also important to be careful of Second Impact Syndrome.

Second Impact Syndrome occurs when someone is already experiencing concussion symptoms and they sustain another head injury.

This can lead to compounded symptoms and in some cases cause blood to flow rapidly to the brain, building intracranial pressure leading to brain herniation and other issues, which can be fatal or cause irreparable harm.

Even if you take every precaution you cannot control the actions of others. If you or a loved one has experienced a traumatic brain injury because of someone else’s negligence or bad decisions, you may be entitled to compensation.
