Common Causes of Wrong Way Car Wrecks & Head-on Collisions
On Sunday afternoon on November 29, 2020, near Asheville, NC, there was crash on I-240 westbound between two vehicles. Officers on the scene say in their initial reports that it appears the crash was caused by one of the drivers going the wrong way on the interstate.
This accident closed several lanes of I-240 by Tunnel Road while the wreckage was cleared from the interstate. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Wrong-way driving accidents account for between 300 and 400 deaths in the United States every year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
These types of accidents are a serious problem, so the National Transportation Safety Board commissioned a special investigation into wrong-way car crashes in 2012.
The investigation showed the following:
- While wrong-way accidents are not as common as other kinds of accidents, they tend to be fatal, and that rate has remained consistent for many years.
- Over 60 percent of wrong-way collisions are drunk driving accidents.
- Older drivers are often involved in wrong-way accidents. Age-induced dementia, disorientation, and slow reaction times can all play a part in many wrong-way accidents.
- Wrong-way collisions occur most often at night, on the weekends, and in lanes closest to the median.
